The wine industry has lost a good man and friend with the passing of Ben Pearson, accomplished wine judge and wine buyer. Ben had a long association with the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and formerly Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition — nearly 30 years of judging up in Cloverdale.
On February 13th, the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) held its annual Public Tasting at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion. This year’s event was a packed house, with over 5,000 people enjoying the delicious food, friendly people and great wines!

The 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) has received 7,164 entries this year. This is the highest number of wine entries seen to date, shattering 2015’s previous record of 6,417 entries from 28 states. Submissions came pouring in from across the nation, from independent winemakers and boutique wineries to large scale producers.

Everyone at the Chronicle competition including the highly competent staff, the legions of friendly volunteers, the office tech and tabulators, the food prep people and of course, we judges – work very hard.
The Public Tasting was a true celebration and the perfect date for everyone, with the Golden Gate bridge glistening in the distance and the sun dancing off bobbing sail boats and thousands of bottles of delicious award winning wines that were paired with gourmet food. People were in love with the entire situation and the conviviality was infectious.
