Judges Determine the Best Wines in America at 18th Annual San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Skilled Wine Industry Experts with Sophisticated Palates Prepare for the SFCWC Wine Judging

Judges Determine the Best Wines

(San Francisco, January 1, 2018) — The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) with presenting sponsor BevMo! has set the standard for wine for the past 18 years. Each year, renowned wine experts from all industries, including trade, media, education and hospitality, come together to evaluate wines and identify those that are truly exceptional. A panel of over 67 judges from across the country will once again bring their knowledge, passion and trained palates to the table to determine this year’s winners in each individual category.

Year after year, the SFCWC–the largest competition of American wines in the world–consistently breaks wine entry records because wineries see the intrinsic value that a “San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Award Winner” title can bring, including increased sales and brand recognition.

Held over a span of four days, the SFCWC judging will commence on January 9th and finish on January 12th with the sweepstakes, where the judges determine the best of the best in each category. The SFCWC judging is a platform that combines generations of wine connoisseurs from diverse backgrounds, with both mature and newer palates.

“The SFCWC is the World Series of wine competitions; to be invited as a judge is an honor and privilege beyond words. Being from Texas, and part of a relatively young wine industry, one of the strengths of the SFCWC is its open-mindedness in promoting the diversity of wines from all across America. In addition, the event showcases wines from both large and small producers, and most of the proceeds are given back to our industry through scholarships and education,” said Jeff Binney, SFCWC judge, writer of “Jeff’s Corner” and Educator & Tour Director at Grape Creek Vineyards in Fredericksburg, TX.

Once these discerning judges select their choices of silver, gold and double gold wines, a select group of winners is chosen to participate in the highly-anticipated Public Tasting event, which will take place this year on February 17th in San Francisco. This popular event will feature thousands of the country’s finest wineries and their awarded wines alongside gourmet food pairings.
