He roots for glamour-free wine regions and low-profile grapes; wants to know how wine is really made; and bottles his own in his garage. He does the monthly Inquiring Winemaker column for the industry trade magazine Wines & Vines; writes for consumers in the Wine Enthusiast; and expounds about home winemaking for WineMaker. He co-authored (with Jim Concannon) Concannon: The First One Hundred Twenty Five Years, a history of that venerable Livermore Valley winery.
